Just a few minutes north by car, Mendocino Village is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. The village is vibrant and beautifully preserved with gorgeous natural surroundings complemented by beautiful architecture - rows of elegant Victorians, New England Salt Box cottages, the iconic Presbyterian Church, Mendocino Hotel and Kwan Tai Temple. The historic Main Street and Lansing Avenue are populated with beautiful toy shops, galleries, boutiques, new and used bookstores, chocolatiers, pubs, cafes and restaurants catering to foodies, hippies and hipsters alike. Between the town’s edge and Pacific Ocean lies the Mendocino Headlands State Park, whose winding pathways lead to secluded beaches and benches where visitors can take in the show of breaching whales and barking sea lions.

History

In the mid-to-late 1800s, The Village was a booming logging community with a population surpassing 30,000. The now pristine Mendocino Headlands was then crowded with shops, boarding houses, lively saloons, and brothels. By the early 1900s, logging was on a decline, and by the 40s, the town had all but been abandoned.

With the opening of the Mendocino Arts Center in the early 70s, the Village experienced a revival and is now home to an eclectic community of artists, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, farmers and forward thinkers. It hosts a number of festivals including the Mendocino Film Festival in June, the week-long Mendocino Music Festival in July, and small events celebrating the region’s bounty throughout the year, including Dungeness crab, salmon, craft beers, regional wine, and wild mushrooms.
